The April 25, 2005 Rescue Education Rally to Stop Tuition Fee Increases was a success! The California Governor and Legislature agreed to NOT increase tuition fees at community colleges in the upcoming fiscal year.
On April 25, 2005 we led a rally at The Capitol in Sacramento, California to Rescue Education - Students of all ages, their parents, and others joined Peter Mathews in a rally to help the future of Education for all Californians. Students, parents, and supporters were able to speak about how tuition increases, budget cuts, and limitations on all levels of education effect their lives and the future of California.
We live in the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, a society in which we are able to conduct space exploration, map the human genome, and build B-2 bombers; yet, when it comes to our children, our most precious resource, we cannot find the funds to give them the education they deserve as Americans. Mathews believes this is wrong and he did something about it!
In 1993 Peter Mathews founded Rescue Education California to lower college and University tuition fees, and to fight for greater educational funding for updated textbooks, computers, smaller
class size, more credentialed teachers, and after school programs. With the help of concerned parents, students, and teachers, Mathews collected thousands of petitions, met with California Legislators, and held rallies for education at California State University, Community College campuses, and the California State Capitol. His group Rescue Education, was able to help stop Governor Pete Wilson from raising Community College tuition fees from $10 to $30 per unit, and made it possible for thousands of low to middle income students to attend college.
In addition, Mathews has spearheaded the effort to reduce California K-12 class sizes and is the founder of Californians for Smaller Class Size K-12. Peter Mathews was the proponent and co-author of a California Class Size Reduction Initiative Constitutional Amendment.
Peter Mathews and Rescue Education California are continually working to keep education affordable for all Californians.
